Filmmaker's Detroit experience became fodder for script

The generous film tax incentives that once drew the biggest names of Hollywood to Michigan are gone. But local hard-scrabble filmmakers like Joe Doughrity continue to bring their vision to the big screen.
Doughrity's 'CornerStore,' about a young Detroit man named Gerard who struggles to break free of his father's expectations and pursue his dreams, was shot last summer in the city using mostly locals as cast and crew. The cast includes Roger Guenveur Smith ('Do the Right Thing,' 'Malcolm X' and most recently 'Mooz-lum,' which also was shot in Detroit). 'CornerStore' also features newcomer Lawrence Lamont as Gerard and cameo appearances by Judge Greg Mathis, rapper Trick Trick, R&B singer Dwele and former boxing great Tommy Hearns.
