Former Inmate Directs Script He Wrote

DeWayne Wilkerson is working on a dream that started in a prison cell at Standish Correctional Facility 13 years ago.

Paging through a prison catalogue, the former drug dealer and music promoter spotted a book entitled "Screenwriting 101" by Neill Hicks. Wilkerson ordered it and went to work. He wrote 10 screenplays while incarcerated for more than 11 years, including the script for his soon-to-be-released movie, "The Greatest Gift."

Wilkerson calls the movie an urban, spiritual drama for the hip-hop generation. He wrote it between 2004 and 2007, after watching the movie, "Oh, God! You Devil," starring George Burns, on the nine-inch, black-and-white television he bought in the prison store for $88. Now former Michigan Department of Corrections prisoner No. 206658 wants to go from bars to the stars.
