After a surprising strong run in theaters against Cowboys and Aliens and others, Sony has chosen to move ahead with a sequel to the CGI/live-action hybrid with the writing team that helped to make the first so successful. The second in The Smurf franchise is set for August 2, 2013.
David Stem and David Weiss will be making their return along with Jordan Kerner on as producer. The duo worked alongside Jay Scherick and David Ronn to develop a story and continued scripting by themselves. They have been quietly working on a screenplay for the sequel for months now with a draft already submitted. Sony wanted to get the team on a script early in order to make the proper preparations for a hybrid film required of a movie like The Smurfs.
