Universal Does! Maybe! Woody Woodpecker could be heading to the big screen for the first time in decades. Illumination Entertainment, the Universal-based animation house, is working on a feature project centering on the crimson-coifed cartoon character. John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky, who co-wrote the Will Ferrell comedy “Blades of Glory,” are in talks to develop a story. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/woody-woodpecker-movie-universal-illumination-262540 Project Updates It Appears “Django Unchained” Has No End To Its Casting Michael Kenneth Williams is in talks to potentially play hired muscle for ranch owner Calvin Candle (Leonardo DiCaprio) in the new film “Django.” Williams was originally considered for the part of Django, but it ended up going to Jamie Foxx. http://blog.moviefone.com/2011/11/16/michael-kenneth-williams-django-unchained-cast/ So, Now Sharon Stone Is Joining This Linda Lovelace Flick? Sweet! Actress Sharon Stone is staying extra busy these days. She announced that she will be appearing in the upcoming biopic about Linda Lovelace, “Inferno: a Linda Lovelace Story.” Stone, 53, will play the mother of Lovelace (played by Malin Akerman) in the film, which will be directed by Matthew Wilder and follows the life of the adult film legend who starred the in 1972 film “Deep Throat.” The film is based on the novel “Ordeal: An Autobiography” by Linda Lovelace with Mike McGrady. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/sharon-stone-linda-lovelace-biopic-262458 Evidently, Gary Ross Has The Confidence Of Lionsgate The jury’s still out as far as I’m concerned on whether or not director Gary Ross was the right director to helm Suzanne Collins’s “The Hunger Games,” even with the mostly-satisfying first trailer debut earlier this week. Lionsgate, however, seems more confident in Ross, as they want him to return to helm the second Hunger Games installment, 2013’s “Catching Fire,” with writer Simon Beaufoy reportedly in the running to script. http://www.movieline.com/2011/11/lionsgate-wants-gary-ross-slumdog-writer-for-hunger-games-sequel-catching-fire.php Acquisitions/Film Festivals Two Months Later, TIFF Flicks Are STILL Getting Sweet Deals First Run Features has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to “Pink Ribbons Inc.,” the National Film Board of Canada documentary by Lea Pool that exposes the breast cancer awareness movement fed by big corporations. “Pink Ribbons” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, as did “Surviving Progress,” another Canadian documentary to be released stateside by First Run Features. Directed by Mathieu Roy and Harold Crooks, “Surviving Progress” is produced by Cinemaginaire, Big Picture Media and the NFB, and questions whether technological and scientific advancement benefits humanity. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/first-run-features-acquires-toronto-262311 Any Kurt Russell Sports Movie Hitting The Big Screen is Fine With Us Anchor Bay has picked the North American rights to “Touchback,” a Kurt Russell football drama directed by Don Handfield. The story follows a farmer (Brian Presley) who wonders how his life would have turned out had he not scored the winning touchdown of a high school championship game, which resulted in him damaging his knee and losing a chance at a pro career. He finds himself back in time and seeks advice from his coach, played by Russell. Handfield wrote as well as directed the pic while Presley produced with Kevin Matusow and Carissa Buffel. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/kurt-russell-touchback-anchor-bay-262434 Business/Legal News Trey Parker And Matt Stone Have At Least Three More Seasons Of “South Park” Left In Them Comedy Central has renewed Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s “South Park” for three more seasons, keeping the animated comedy on the air through 2016. The deal for three additional seasons, which would have cable’s longest-running animated series hitting a 20th season, means Parker and Stone will continue on with the show, continuing to write, direct and edit every episode. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/south-park-trey-parker-matt-stone-262355 “The Munsters” Makes A Comeback … As A Drama On NBC NBC announced that it has picked up the pilot for its revamp of the ’60s monster comedy “The Munsters,” billing it as an “imaginative reinvention” of the classic series and “a visually spectacular one-hour drama.” Drama? This might be interesting. Also upping the intrigue factor — Bryan Fuller, of decidedly morbid offerings “Dead Like Me” and “Pushing Daisies,” is serving as writer and executive producer. http://www.thewrap.com/tv/article/nbc-picks-munsters-pilot-32851 NBC Orders A Little More “Grimm” A handful of additional scripts have been ordered for NBC’s rookie Friday drama “Grimm.” After launching strong in a competitive genre-laden time slot, the fairy tale procedural has since dropped off in the ratings, but the hourlong has managed to top the 9 p.m. hour in the advertiser-coveted demo for most weeks. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/grimm-nbc-scripts-262467 Sony And James L. Brooks Go Their Separate Ways After a 20-year relationship, Sony Pictures has declined to renew its production deal with James L. Brooks, the iconic filmmaker behind such hits as “As Good As It Gets,” as well as the expensive 2010 flop “How Do You Know.” http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/sony-james-l-brooks-overall-deal-262505 Website to Watch http://www.smallbizontv.com/ Hoping for a situation where real life can imitate art, AllScreen Entertainment is putting out a casting call online to find a business they can use as the focus of a new documentary/reality television series in Canada. To submit your workplace and group of co-workers for the small screen, you must post a YouTube video via a private link. In early 2012, finalists will be invited to meet with producers to develop compelling pitches based around their submissions/companies in order to present them to networks both in Canada and around the globe. More information on the submission and selection process can be found here. Additional Source: www.cynopsis.com |
