Jannise's Industry Weekly: | Stephen Jannise AFF Film Program Director | WGA & PGA Award Nominations Announced The Writers Guild of America announced their nominations today, shining the spotlight on some of the most talented screenwriters working today. Steven Zaillian, 2009 Austin Film Festival Distinguished Screenwriter Honoree, has been nominated for both of the adaptations he (co-)penned this year, THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO and MONEYBALL. The WGA has also honored a number of other strong films including Alexander Payne’s THE DESCENDANTS, which was showcased at the 2011 Austin Film Festival. The George Clooney starrer continues to build momentum after it also received nominations from The Producers Guild of America earlier this week. For the past two years, the PGA awards have been a key predictor for the Academy Awards. Two films that were initially considered “awards season underdogs” (THE HURT LOCKER in ’09, THE KING’S SPEECH in ’10) won the top PGA prize and then went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Will THE DESCENDANTS or THE ARTIST (also showcased at AFF 2011) claim the Producer of the Year award and get a headstart in the race for the Oscar? From the AFF Blog: Writers on Screenwriting - Jim Dauterive | Next up in our series Writers on Screenwriting: Jim Dauterive, developer/executive producer “ Bob’s Burgers” and writer/executive producer for " King of the Hill." We know how valuable it can be to hear another writer, especially a successful one, discuss their craft. It can inspire renewed commitment to one's work, give ideas for different ways to approach a story and remind us that we are not alone with our frustrations - and joys - in the writing process. We've asked some friends of Austin Film Festival to share some of their thoughts on aspects of the writing process with us. Here's Jim on how to combat feeling stonewalled by creativity: When I was a younger writer, I used to dawdle, delay and wait for perfection that was never going to come until I had run out of time and had to write something, anything, and hope it was okay. Somehow, I almost always got away with it. But that's a cocky, immature young man's game and I no longer have a young man's nerves. I've got what old golfers call the yips. I hate the yips. So this is how I cope; this is the deal I make with myself: I give my writing permission to be bad. I keep writing until I feel in my core it is good. That works for me. That's how I get words on the page. But the creative process is, I think, like grieving. It's a very personal thing. There's no way around it; writing is godawful hard. So if you're going to take it on, I suggest that you forgive yourself, love yourself, be hard but not too hard on yourself, and do the best you can. James Franco to Release Debute Novel James Franco, who brought his passion project Sal to the 2011 Festival, plans to release his first novel in 2013. Titled Actors Anonymous, the novel is a supposed fictionalized retelling of Franco’s experiences as an actor. Those who saw James present Sal at the Festival will recognize a similar focus on the pressures of stardom. Ed Park, the editor, described it as “a hugely ambitious and wild ride.” Congrats James on your newest artistic venture! 5. The Producers' Book is Here! | What is the Producers’ Book? It is a document that contains loglines and contact info for Semifinalists and above from the 2011 Screenplay & Teleplay Competitions. It also includes our Print Source list of all films that screened at AFF 2011. The book is distributed annually to over 300 production companies and other industry professionals. If you are a producer and interested in receiving a copy of the book, please send a request to Matt Dy, Screenplay Competition Director, at matt@austinfilmfestival.com. Please specify the company you are with and whether you want an electronic or physical copy sent to you. The 2012 Screenplay & Teleplay and Film Competitions are now open for submissions! Who knows? Your script or film may end up in next year’s Producers’ Book. Click here to submit today! | | | | |
