Projects Announced Hot, Hot, HOT French Pair Sign On To Romantic Drama Tahar Rahim and Lea Seydoux will lead “Grand Central,” a contemporary romance from writer-director Rebecca Zlotowski, whose 2010 debut “Belle Épine” (also known as “Dear Prudence,” see below), won her acclaim back in France and on the festival circuit, and saw her pick up the Best First Film at the Louis Delluc Prize. Rahim will play a man addicted to danger who starts working in a nuclear plant and becomes exposed to dangerous levels of radiation, while Seydoux will play a colleague that he begins a passionate affair with. McCarthy’s books “No Country For Old Men,” “All the Pretty Horses” and “The Road” were adapted into feature films — but he was not involved with the film adaptations. Recently, the Pulitzer Prize winner broke away from writing his next novel to deliver the spec script for “The Counselor.” Nick Wechsler, Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz, who produced the film adaptation of “The Road,” preemptively acquired “The Counselor.” Film has a setup similar to that of “No Country for Old Men”: It takes place in the contemporary Southwest, and its plot involves a main character whose dabbling in the drug business leads to disaster. Along with the male protagonist, it features two female leads. http://thewrap.com/deal-central/column-post/no-country-old-men-novelist-cormac-mccarthy-sells-first-spec-script-34512 A Low Budget Time Travel Picture? Must Be A Richard Curtis Thing Richard Curtis, the scribe whose “Warhorse” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Notting Hill” and “Love, Actually” have generated millions of box-office bucks, is gearing up to get back in the director’s chair this summer. Curtis is to direct “About Time,” billed by backers as a low-budget time-travel picture from his own script. The project is in preproduction with Working Title Films, the Universal-owned production banner led by Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/war-horse-writer-richard-curtis-282961 Don’t Laugh, But There Might, Possibly, Potentially, Eventually Be A “Hancock” Sequel If you’re a fan of watching a drunk Will Smith flip over cars and mess with children, today’s your lucky day. According to Peter Berg, there may (emphasis on may) be a sequel to the 2008 superhero movie, “Hancock.” Berg said, “We’ve been talking about the sequel between us, Will Smith, [producers] Michael Mann and Akiva Goldsman and myself.” However, don’t get too excited “Hancock” enthusiasts: there are a few caveats. “We’re all interested, but we literally just have trouble getting into the same room at the same time,” admits Berg. “We did have a series of meetings last year and started to hash out an idea for sequel — and Will Smith actually had the idea — so I think it will happen, it’s just a question of timing.” http://news.moviefone.com/2012/01/18/hancock-sequel-will-smith_n_1214506.html Nigerian Director Busting Out With Film Number Two Although the Nollywood film industry is one of the fastest-growing film markets around, it still contends with a “poor quality films” perception often attached in describing the industry but filmmaker Obi Emelonye hopes to change that with his new big-budget thriller. His hit film “The Mirror Boy” was a huge success, critically and financially, in the UK and throughout Africa last year. His latest production, “Last Flight To Abuja,” is the first-ever Nollywood disaster film and, with a budget of $500,000, will become one of the most expensive Nollywood films made. Flick is inspired by real events that took place in 2006 when the country’s civil aviation authority was rocked by a series of incidents that left hundreds dead. http://blogs.indiewire.com/shadowandact/nigerian-director-obi-emelonye-follows-up-award-winning-hit-film-mirror-boy-with-big-budget-thriller-last-flight-to-abuja New Regency Is Really Ready For A “Blood Feud” New Regency has optioned the rights to the book “Blood Feud,” the true story of a whistleblower at Johnson & Johnson. Adam Cooper and Bill Collage, who wrote “Tower Heist,” are attached to adapt. Kathleen Sharp, a journalist who has written for The New York Times Magazine, Playboy, Fortune and other magazines, wrote the book “Blood Feud: The Man Who Blew the Whistle on One of the Deadliest Prescription Drugs Ever.” She will be a consultant on the project. “Blood Feud” is billed as a real-life thriller about the anti-anemia drug Procrit — and the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical rep who helped sell it until he came to believe it was causing harm. http://www.thewrap.com/movies/column-post/new-regency-options-whistleblower-story-blood-feud-exclusive-34545 Barry Josephson Gets Into The Game With “The Magician” Barry Josephson and his Josephson Entertainment banner are partnering with West Omaha Films to produce “The Magician,” a biopic of Marlin “The Magician” Briscoe, pro football’s first black starting quarterback. Gregory Allen Howard, who penned the football movie “Remember the Titans” and worked on “Ali,” wrote the script detailing Briscoe’s rise to the top, his meteoric fall and his journey to self-fulfillment. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/marlin-briscoe-biopic-barry-josephson-first-black-quarterback-283043 The Great Comic Book “Bone” Is Coming To The Big Screen Patrick Sean Smith, who created the ABC Family show “Greek,” is jumping into features. Smith has been tapped to write “Bone,” Warner Bros.’ adaptation of the cult-favorite Jeff Smith comic book that now has P.J. Hogan attached to direct. Dan Lin of Lin Pictures and Animal Logic are producing the adaptation of the fantasy series, the rights to which Warners picked up in 2008. The comic follows three cousins from the Bone family, small, bald and humanlike creatures with big noses. The trio are run out of their hometown and find themselves in a mysterious valley where they are separated and hunted by other creatures. First, she revealed her “wish list” of actors to round out the cast. She’s been talking about Halle Berry for years, and now she’s added that she also wants Nia Long, Kerry Washington and Blair Underwood to sign on for roles, as her older sister Erma, her younger sister Carolyn, and her brother Cecil respectively. Apparently, no one has actually signed on yet, but that Aretha “is scheduled to meet with the director and financiers … to discuss her final casting selections for the biopic.” That means there IS a director attached to it and, it seems, financiers. Lastly, the film will be titled “From These Roots” after Franklin’s 1999 autobiography. http://blogs.indiewire.com/shadowandact/aretha-franklin-biopic-apparently-has-director-financing-its-official-title-her-dream-cast All Those Who Think Damon And Affleck Are Set For That Whitey Bulger Movie Stand Up … Not So Fast, People! So, who is the right filmmaker to bring the story of notorious gangster Whitey Bulger to the big screen? One of the biggest news stories of the last year, the FBI made headlines worldwide when they finally nabbed Bulger — on their top ten Most Wanted list for the past few decades — who had been hiding out in California for years. The head of the legendary Boston outfit the Winter Hill gang, Bulger ruled with an iron fist, stacking up 21 bodies in addition to numerous other charges including racketeering. Last fall, Boston boys Ben Affleck and Matt Damon announced there were planning a movie with “Boardwalk Empire” writer Terence Winter penning the script. But it seems another Boston native may want to stomp on their turf. Mark Wahlberg has revealed to Reuters that he was been personally summoned to meet with Bulger. Stay tuned. http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/do-ben-affleck-matt-damon-have-competition-mark-wahlberg-says-whitey-bulger-wants-to-meet-with-him Everyone Can Relax Now, Kristen Wiig Ain’t Doing No "Bridesmaids" Sequel So far, we’ve heard from Jon Hamm, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Judd Apatow and Paul Feig regarding the rumored plans Universal has for making a “Bridesmaids” sequel whether or not star, co-writer and co-creator Kristen Wiig comes back on board. Generally, the consensus from the rest of the cast has been without Wiig, there’s no reason for them to come back. Well, Wiig has finally broken her veil of silence and weighed in with a pretty emphatic statement about whether or not she’ll do another movie. “We’re not planning on doing one,” Wiig told E! at the Golden Globes. “We had a special time making the first one, but we’re really excited to try something else.” That something else is a top secret script she’s been working with her “Bridesmaids” co-writer Annie Mumolo. http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/kristen-wiig-finally-weighs-in-says-shes-not-planning-another-bridesmaids-movie But She Is Doing A De Niro Film While Kristen Wiig may have put “Bridesmaids 2″ behind her, the actress is far from finished with movie-making. Wiig is planning on making the long gestating film “The Comedian” this summer for director Sean Penn. Her co-star? Robert De Niro. The film, described as a “romantic comic drama” by producer Art Linson, follows an aging insult comic (De Niro) — meaning, at worst, it will probably be like an unofficial sequel to “The King of Comedy.” Shooting is set to happen this summer, following the season finale of “Saturday Night Live.” http://news.moviefone.com/2012/01/18/kristen-wiig-in-the-comedian_n_1214737.html “The Side Effect” Cranks Up The Confusion Before Shooting A Single Frame Pharmaceutical thrillers seem to be becoming something of a trend at the moment, between Steven Soderbergh recruiting the likes of Jude Law and Blake Lively for “Side Effects” and now “Cabin Fever 2″ and “Innkeepers” director Ti West finding funding for his own project, called (at least for now), “The Side Effect.” Now there’s some additional news as West has just nabbed Liv Tyler to star. She’ll play Catherine Rigby, a woman who volunteers to spend several months alone in space as part of an experiment by a massive pharmaceutical company. One day, she awakens to find herself inexplicably pregnant and is soon suffering a major paranoia attack as her attempts to find out the truth behind her seemingly immaculate conception lead to more and more elusive answers. http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=32912 Soderbergh’s Not Retiring JUST Yet, Gets Backing For His Next Flick Annapurna Pictures and Open Road Films are partnering on “Side Effects,” the latest project from Steven Soderbergh. The psychological thriller will be financed and produced by Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures and released domestically by Open Road Films. The distribution deal is a bit of surprise since reports, now proved premature and erroneous, had the film going to Summit. (The film was being chased by several bidders.) The project, which a few weeks ago was being circulated under the title of “Bitter Pill,” is described as a thriller set in the world of psychopharmacology. Scott Z. Burns wrote the script and is producing with Gregory Jacobs and Lorenzo di Bonaventura. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/steven-soderbergh-side-effects-megan-ellison-annapurna-open-road-282933 Aaron Tveit Gets Ready For “Les Miserables” It’s official: Aaron Tveit has signed a deal to join the cast of “Les Miserables,” Universal and Working Title’s big-screen adaptation of the classic musical. Oscar winner Tom Hooper is directing the movie, whose cast includes Hugh Jackman as convicted bread stealer Jean Valjean and Russell Crowe as his nemesis Inspector Javert. Tveit, who may be best known from a run on the CW’s “Gossip Girl,” will play Enjolras, who leads a student rebellion in the streets of Paris and orders Javert’s execution. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/les-miserables-aaron-tveit-movie-hugh-jackman-gossip-girl-282807 “Filth” Set To Kick Off, With McAvoy And Bell Getting Dirty James McAvoy is quietly amassing one of the most interesting filmographies out there. The actor toplined two major tentpoles in 2011 — “X-Men: First Class” and “Arthur Christmas” — and now he’s quickly gone in the other direction, getting in front of the cameras for Danny Boyle’s thriller “Trance,” and the gritty Brit crime flick “Welcome To The Punch.” And kicking off 2012, he’s settling into what be his most challenging effort to date, an adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s “Filth.” This one has been brewing for a while now, with Jamie Bell boarding over the summer and now with filming set to kick off, the rest of the cast has been solidified, and it’s certainly very promising. Rising actress Imogen Poots, seasoned vet Jim Broadbent and go-to slimeball Eddie Marsan have come aboard the film that has also added Joanne Froggatt to its ranks. http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/imogen-poots-jim-broadbent-eddie-marsan-round-out-cast-for-filth-with-james-mcavoy Joe Massingill Is Having An Interesting Week With “Trouble With The Curve” Warner Bros. is circling Joe Massingill, a young actor with a handful of television credits, to star with Clint Eastwood and Amy Adams in the Warner Bros. drama “Trouble With the Curve.” Matthew Lillard is in talks with the studio to join the cast, as well. In “Trouble With the Curve,” Eastwood plays an ailing baseball scout who takes his daughter on one last recruiting trip to Atlanta. Lillard is in talks to play another scout. Massingill grew up in Georgia and is a graduate of that state’s Valdosta State University. It is unclear what role the studio is looking at him to play. Eastwood’s long-time producing partner, Robert Lorenz, is making his directorial debut with the movie, which Randy Brown wrote. Adams will play the daughter. http://thewrap.com/movies/column-post/joe-massingill-talks-clint-eastwood-baseball-movie-34509 Today’s Comic Book Adaptation Updates Today’s offerings include tidbits from “Prometheus,” “Dark Knight Rises” and “The Walking Dead,” and has a clip from this week’s episode of “Merlin,” for you King Arthur geeks out there. http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=36484 That Madeline Stowe Dream Project May Really Happen Someday It has been a long while since we’ve heard about Madeleine Stowe’s dream project Western, “Unbound Captives.” First announced way, way back in 2009, the film was set to star Hugh Jackman, Rachel Weisz and Robert Pattinson, with Jackman set to play a frontiersman who rescues a woman (Weisz) whose husband is killed and children kidnapped by a Comanche war party. Pattinson was going to play Weisz’s kidnapped son, a role that it was reported in 2010 would require him to speak “almost entirely” in Comanche. But despite kind words from everyone about the script, “Unbound Captives” has continued to sit unmade. But Stowe has high hopes that Pattinson will stay on board, even though he’s approaching his 25th birthday and too old for the part. Stowe said she might age the character upward to keep Pattinson. While it’s still up to Pattinson if he’ll sign on, Stowe is keeping her fingers crossed that after after being announced three years ago, the movie will be able to shoot next spring, for a 2013 release. http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/madeline-stowe-says-she-might-age-up-robert-pattinsons-character-in-unbound-captives-so-he-can-still-play-the-role Pilot Season Fox Really Likes Being In The Spy Show Bidness Fox is back in business with Josh Friedman. Past Friedman projects set up at Fox include last year’s passed over pilot “Locke & Key” and 2008 series “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.” This past summer, he inked a three-year deal with 20th TV, which entailed working on his own projects as well as joining “The Finder” as a consulting producer. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/fox-asset-pilot-lock-key-josh-friedman-282852 Call The Doctor! The CW Has Pilot Fever! The CW is moving forward with its “Green Arrow” project, the “Sex and the City” prequel “The Carrie Diaries” and a modern-day “Beauty and the Beast,” ordering all three projects to pilot. The hourlong drama is a modern retelling of the legendary comics character and hails from “Green Lantern” duo Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim, who will executive produce and pen the project alongside “Fringe” co-EP Andrew Kreisberg. Meanwhile, the “Carrie Diaries,” based on the book of the same name by “Sex and the City” author Candace Bushnell, centers on Carrie Bradshaw during her senior year of high school in the early 1980s as she asks her first questions about love, sex, friendship and family while navigating the worlds of high school and Manhattan. Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage and Len Goldstein’s Fake Empire will executive produce alongside Warner Bros. Television. Amy B. Harris will adapt the book and serve as showrunner. “Beauty and the Beast” is based on the 1980s CBS drama that starred Ron Perlman as Vincent (aka the Beast) and Linda Hamilton as Catherine (the Beauty). The network has ordered his untitled multi-camera comedy to pilot. The project, which hails from Chernin Entertainment and 20th Century Fox Television, is loosely based on Stoller’s real-life experiences. The project has been described as a twenty-something ensemble comedy about a guy who gets his heart broken by his girlfriend and now has to work one cubicle away from her at an ad agency. Stoller will write and direct the pilot as well as serve as an executive producer alongside Chernin’s Katherine Pope and Peter Chernin. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/cbs-nick-stoller-comedy-pilot-283167 “Mormon” Star Inks Himself A Sweet Deal Andrew Rannells could be going from Broadway to NBC. “The Book of Mormon” Tony nominee has inked a talent deal with 20th Television and NBC that would see him star in the untitled blended family comedy from “Glee” co-creator Ryan Murphy and his new Season 3 scribe Ali Adler. The single-camera project, described as a comedy about a gay couple and the woman who becomes their surrogate as they start a family, landed at the network with a significant penalty commitment after a multiple network bidding war. The multi-hyphenate, along with partners AEG and talent agency CAA, have struck a deal with billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban to rebrand Cuban’s HDNet as AXS TV (pronounced Access) beginning this summer. The channel’s programming will rely heavily on live lifestyle and live entertainment fare, leveraging the music assets of AEG, a top venue owner and and tour promoter, and the A-list connections and production capabilities of Seacrest. As part of the rebrand, the network will cater to pop culture and entertainment enthusiasts rather than the younger, heavily male demographic that HDNet historically has targeted. Cuban will continue to lead the channel on behalf of the venture, with Denver-based Philip Garvin still involved as GM of network operations. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/ryan-seacrest-tv-network-mark-cuban-283019 That New Online Movie Company Has Added To Its Board Online movie distribution and marketing platform
