Projects Announced
Helmer Ti West Finally (!) Finds His “Cabin Fever 2″ Follow-Up

Director Ti West has had a patchy time of it since his breakout critical hit “The House Of The Devil” in 2009. He butted heads with Lionsgate over “Cabin Fever 2,” and pulled out of “The Haunting In Georgia” when he foresaw similar problems. His “The Innkeepers” premiered at the South By Southwest festival last spring, but has only just limped to VOD. But thankfully West has still managed to claw together the funding for his next film, “The Side Effects”: a sci-fi tale about “pharmaceutical testing and paranoia.”

Adam Brody Is About To Have A Busy 2012

Will this become the Year of Seth Cohen? Adam Brody has signed on to play the lead in “Some Girls,” as well as “Welcome to the Jungle.” Kirsten would be so proud! In “Girls,” Brody will team with writer-producer Neil LaBute for a story about a successful writer who goes to meet his four ex-girlfriends in hotel rooms around the country before getting married. It’s based on LaBute’s play. “Jungle” is decidedly more high concept: a group of design firm staffers get trapped in the jungle following a company retreat, and all hell breaks loose. Jean-Claude Van Damme, Rob Huebel and Kristen Schaal co-star.

Perfect Casting Alert: Tommy Lee Jones Will Play Douglas MacArthur

“Life is a lively process of becoming,” is a quote from General Douglas MacArthur. While this existential yet vague comment could be construed and interpreted any which way you want, it happens to lend itself well to the art of acting. Enter Tommy Lee Jones, who will have the job of “becoming” General MacArthur in the upcoming political thriller, “Emperor.” The film, which also stars Matthew Fox as General Bonner Fellers, takes place in the days following the Japanese surrender in WWII, when MacArthur served as the temporary ruler of Japan, in place of disgraced Emperor Hirohito.

Korean Helmer Making A Splash With First English Language Flick

You may not know who filmmaker Bong Joon-ho is, but clearly the world of discerning A-list actors do. The South Korean auteur, known for thrilling international works like “The Host” and the police procedural “Memories of Murder” is mounting his first English-language feature and so far a little guy named Chris Evans is pegged to lead the picture. A sci-fi genre film called, “Snow Piercer,” two more actors, this pair from across the pond, are in talks to join the film: Tilda Swinton and Jamie Bell. Set in a post-apocalyptic winter world, “Snow Piercer” takes place on board a train full of survivors, divided by class, battling to stay alive, and is based on the French graphic novel “Le Transperceneige,” created by author Jacques Lob.

And Now Begins The Great Sally Kirkland Comeback

Sally Kirkland will star in the independent movie “Alice Stands Up,” according to writer and director Brent Roske. Kirkland and Roske recently worked together on the short film “African Chelsea,” which has been well received at several festivals. The new film is about a woman who has to go into the workforce late in life after an investment made by her late husband goes bust. The character, Alice, has never worked before. She has to learn about everything from how to use a GPS system to how to do sales pitches as she survives jobs like delivering pizza and doing door-to-door sales. At the same time Alice is mending relationships with her daughter and autistic son.

Another YouTube Sensation Coming To TV. Who Had “Honey Badger” In The Pool?

Honey Badger don’t care, but the hope is that TV networks will. On the heels of Randall and “the crazy, nastya– Honey Badger” videos’ 31 million-plus YouTube views, the viral sensation is being developed as an animation/live action comedy hybrid, titled “Honey Badger U.” The project, which soon will be pitched to broadcast and cable networks, will follow an animated Randall, who is the chief professor of life sciences at a dysfunctional university. His course will feature his trademark color-commentary on documentary footage of topics related to science and the animal kingdom while forming an unusual bond with his student, fellow professors and the University mascot, “Honey,” a “nastya–” honey badger. Charles Bishop and Kirk Schenck, the pair behind 6-month-old Canadian production company Six Eleven Media, will serve as executive producers, along with comedian/writer Harland Williams.

Joel Edgerton Gives Us All Another Reason To Hate Him

Handsome? Check. Well built? Check. Successful acting career? Check. Now he’s sold a script, too? Joel Edgerton, one of the brightest up-and-coming actors in star-starved Hollywood, has branched into screenwriting, selling a spec script titled “One Night Stand” to New Regency. A drama with comedic elements, the script is described as an honest look at a man and a woman in the aftermath of a one night stand. The deal, which also sees Edgerton exec producing, occurred late last year. He is not attached to star.

Project Updates
Spike Lee’s “Oldboy” Remake Delayed — Again

Spike Lee’s casting troubles for his interpretation of fanboy/girl fave “Oldboy,” based on the original manga of the same name have been well documented. And now production on the film has been pushed back to late summer/early fall (early spring was the previously-scheduled start date) thanks in part to star Josh Brolin’s press commitments for “Men In Black 3,” but likely also because the film’s starring cast hasn’t been sured-up yet. Clive Owen, Colin Firth and Christian Bale have all declined the the main villain role. The hunt is back on for the actor to play that obviously pivotal role.

That Viola Davis Drama Just Got Another Title Change

The Viola Davis education drama, initially titled “Still I Rise,” and then switched to “Learning To Fly” last month, has gotten another name-change. It’s now titled “Won’t Back Down,” although don’t get too comfy with that title yet because it just might change again; why not? This is its 3rd name. Also, it was initially scheduled to be released on March 30th, 2012, but the studio distributing it (Fox) has pushed that date all the way back to September 30th. No immediate reason given for the shift; likely just better positioning it to be successful. The education drama, produced by Walden Media & 20th Century Fox, is centered on two frustrated mothers (played by Davis and Maggie Gyllenhaal) who team up to transform an inner-city public school in Pittsburgh, PA.

Another Scribe Is Taking A Whack At Adapting R.L. Stine

It’s getting on for four years since Columbia picked up the rights to RL Stine’s hoard of “Goosebumps” novels. A film has been slowly oozing through development ever since, and has now potentially scored a new screenwriter in “Jack The Giant Killer”’s Darren Lemke. A 1990s publishing phenomenon that’s still going strong, “Goosebumps” is an enormous series of kids’ horror novels by the prolific Stine (who, unusually for these things, is a real author and not a pseudonym for a franchise collective). Previous script drafts have been attempted by “1408″’s writers Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander, and Carl Ellsworth, who wrote “Disturbia,” and the “Last House On The Left” remake.

Could It Be? Could Cody’s “SVH” Flick Be A Musical?

When Diablo Cody promised back in November that her in-the-works new “Sweet Valley High” movie would be “a feast for the senses”, we didn’t quite expect this. She has now teased that we might possibly expect her Francine Pascal-inspired opus to arrive as a musical. “There’s original songs being written for it right now,” she revealed, “which is the most exciting development. They’re amazing. They’re being written by these Tony and Pulitzer winning songwriters from Broadway who are the best!” Asked if that actually meant “SVH” is going to be a musical, she grinned “Perhaps it is…” Wow. With any luck, she is referring to Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, who are, in fact, the best.

Fear Not, “Hunger Games” Fans! The Team Is In Place For The Sequel

As it has been rumoured, so it has come to pass: Simon Beaufoy, who was reportedly Lionsgate’s top choice to write the “Hunger Games” sequel “Catching Fire,” has indeed won the gig and is already hard at work. Gary Ross, who co-wrote (along with novelist Suzanne Collins and in-demand script doctor Billy Ray) and directed the first film, is back on megaphone duty, but is apparently supervising Beaufoy’s adaptation of the second novel in the trilogy. With the likes of Woody Harrelson and Liam Hemsworth also likely to return, “Catching Fire” is currently scheduled for November 22, 2013. Meanwhile, “The Hunger Games” arrives on March 23.

The Great And Powerful Joss Finds A Leading Lady For His Latest

While she’s had more exposure on TV to date (including a run as one of Don Draper’s more memorable mistresses on “Mad Men”), Abigail Spencer has seen her film career hit a new gear recently. And according to the actress, she’s landed a lead role on “In Your Eyes,” produced by legendary workhorse Joss Whedon. Plot details are, obviously, secret, but Whedon talked it up in October as the first production from his new company Bellwether Pictures that he won’t personally direct. That job has gone to Brin Hill, who will nonetheless work from a script written by Joss himself. Shooting is set to start next month in LA, and, if the way his Shakespeare adaptation “Much Ado About Nothing” was stealthily filmed was any indication, it might all happen in Joss’s garage.

“Horrible Bosses” Helmer Gordon Moving On To “Theft”

While they haven’t sealed the deal on “Horrible Bosses 2,” two of the film’s alums are teaming up on a new project. “Horrible Bosses” director Seth Gordon will be taking up the reigns of Universal’s “Identity Theft,” starring Jason Batemen and Melissa McCarthy. Details on the comedy are scant; it revolves around a man whose identity is stolen by a woman (hilarity ensues, etc, etc.). Steve Conrad (”The Pursuit of Happyness”) wrote the initial draft and Craig Mazin (”Hangover Part II”) is rewriting the screenplay.

Thus Begins Pilot Season, With CBS Getting The Ball Rolling

Kari Lizer Is One Hot TV Writer

Kari Lizer has made it two-for-two this development season. ABC has given pilot orders to an untitled comedy from the former “Will & Grace” scribe less than a week after NBC moved forward with Lizer’s best friend project. Lizer’s ABC muticamera project, which hails from Warner Bros. Television, revolves around Hilary Pfeiffer-Dunne, a high-powered executive who has ruled corporate America and is forced to adjust to the challenges of serving as a full-time mom to her two teenagers after she finds herself unemployed. Her NBC multicamera project, meanwhile, revolves around two friends, Nicole and Jen, who lead vastly different lives who can’t live without one another. Nicole has a perfect family and a trouble-free pregnancy; while Jen has a strained relationship with her family, trouble with men and gained weight while on a diet.

Melissa McCarthy Is Also, Guess What? Crazy Hot Right Now

CBS is moving in with Melissa McCarthy … again. The “Mike & Molly” network has bought an untitled half-hour comedy script from Larry Dorf (”MadTV”) and McCarthy’s husband and “Bridesmaids” co-star Ben Falcone. The project, which hails from Warner Brothers TV, centers on the character of David Gell, who learns that there’s no place like home… unless home is your parents’ house and you’re 37 years old.

Werner Herzog’s Death Row Flicks Are Coming To Your TV

Though it starts with squirrels and ends with hummingbirds, Werner Herzog’s latest documentary effort “Into The Abyss” is easily the most straightforward of his career, but is no less powerful as a result. The film investigates a triple homicide from all angles, with Herzog not only interviewing the perpetrators including the charismatic Michael Perry, but also the relatives of the victims, and surprisingly, the wife of one of the three charged with the crime who only met her husband after he landed in jail. Well, there’s going to be lots more to come. Last fall, Herzog revealed that he had actually made four films based on death row inmates, and it looks like we’ll get to see them soon. He has announced that the films will be coming to Investigation Discovery later this year in a series titled “On Death Row.” The films will continue to see Herzog interviewing those on death row in Texas and Florida, with exact details not yet known.

Sean Hayes Is Planning A Trip To Pawnee, Indiana

“Parks and Recreation” is slowly working its way through the cast of “Will & Grace.” The NBC comedy’s latest hire: Sean Hayes! The actor-producer will guest star in a spring episode that puts the spotlight on Leslie’s (Amy Poehler) campaign for city council. Hayes will play a revered TV journalist who the locals refer to affectionately as “the Matt Lauer of Indianapolis.” His character lands a big interview with Leslie, potentially boosting her election prospects. Or not. Rumor has it the high profile chat doesn’t go as smoothly as Leslie would have liked.

“Cougar Town” To Return In February, Long National Nightmare Ends

Happy Valentine’s Day, “Cougar Town” fans! The cul-de-sac crew — and “Big Joe” — are back for Season 3, premiering Feb. 14 at 8:30 p.m. EST on ABC. Last week, the network canceled its poorly-rated critical flop “Work It,” which ultimately lead to “Cougar Town’s” early return. No word yet on how the show will address a speculated name change, or how “Cougar Town’s” return will affect the viewing parties created by showrunner Bill Lawrence. Tuesday afternoon, Bill Lawrence tweeted the following: “Cougar Town is back. Valentine’s day. Big show changing episode. Stay in, watch, and I’ll send you a bottle of wine.”

Today’s Best News: We’re Getting A Third Season Of “Sherlock”

Just after the airing of the second season finale of the BBC’s “Sherlock” in the UK on Sunday, show runner Stephen Moffat confirmed on Twitter that the BBC has already ordered a third season. In fact the network commissioned it around the same time they did the second. The questions now are when will the next season air and which of Doyle’s stories will they use. With Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch’s “Hobbit” and “Star Trek 2″ commitments, along with Moffat’s “Doctor Who” workload, both are likely to be busy until later this year at the earliest. The second season of “Sherlock” is scheduled to air States-side on PBS in May.

Terry Gilliam’s Latest Short? Yeah, It’s Gonna Be On The Net

It’d be a mistake for anyone to call one-time Monty Python member Terry Gilliam a conventional filmmaker, but with his new short, “The Wholly Family,” the imaginative director is now trying something completely different: an online screening of the film, made possible by sponsor The Guardian. Flick follows an American family vacationing in Naples and the surreal visions of their young son after he steals a Pulcinella — the black masked unofficial mascot of the city — from a street cart. The film will live stream on the Guardian’s website starting at 7pm UK time on January 23rd, and will cost £1.99, available to anyone in the world (bar Italy). Viewers who log in that night can also watch a live interview and Q&A with Gilliam. The film will be available online for two weeks. North American viewers can access it via guardiannews.com in the States.
