In 2006, David Cook was offering his book Golf's Sacred Journey: Seven Days at the Links of Utopia for free on the Internet because no publisher would touch it.
Five years later, the book has been turned into a movie starring two Academy Award winners, Robert Duvall and Melissa Leo.
Seven Days in Utopia (opening Friday) is a bit like The Karate Kid of golf. The independent movie follows a young golfer (played by Lucas Black of the movie Friday Night Lights) who has a meltdown at a tour tournament. In trying to escape his humiliation, he finds himself stranded in the tiny town of Utopia.
There he meets a wise former player and rancher (Duvall) who spends a week using unconventional methods to teach him about golf, life and faith.
