Briggs, an English professor at Iowa’s Marshalltown Community College, co-wrote the screenplay for Farmiga’s directorial debut, “Higher Ground,” with writer Tim Metcalfe. The film, which opened Friday, is a fictionalized version of Briggs’s life in a fundamentalist Christian community. Farmiga stars as Corinne, a character based on Briggs herself.
The thoughtful, quiet movie offers an unfamiliar take on religious devotion, presenting a group of intense believers in a powerful and often uncomfortably close light. Corinne, like Briggs, came to doubt her faith and has a slow, painful falling out from her family and her community.
“I don’t know where I’m at with God,” Briggs said. “But it’s important that I believe in my journey.”
