As the Script Turns: A Hollywood Tale

A versatile screenwriter for more than 10 years, Mr. Maren is quite familiar with the politics of Hollywood, that dreamy California whirlpool where so many struggling actors, writers and filmmakers go to find cozy jobs waiting tables. That culture has put too many of his screenplays, even the ones purchased by studios, on ice.

At the beginning of this year, he decided to circumnavigate standard procedure.

“I made a New Year’s resolution at the end of 2010—I’ll write a film that can be shot for not much money, about $1.5 million,” Michael Maren declared. “I’ll produce it and direct it. There’s a lot I don’t know, but it will be a very tight film, no big car chases or robots or anything like that.”
