Silent 'Artist': The French in L.A.

"They were delighted to see that a guy from France was able to do this movie, because it's their own story," Hazanavicius recalls. "Suddenly, a guy comes and says, 'I'm going to do your story. I'm not from here, I don't speak perfect English, but I'm going to do it.' "

The movie, called The Artist, is the surprise hit of the movie year, a critical smash at the Cannes Film Festival (where it won the best actor award for its leading man, Jean Dujardin) that is poised to be a breakout success at the Toronto Film Festival as well. The Artist is an unabashedly old-fashioned project, from its almost square-screen format to its story, which is the history of silent films, itself.
